In our increasingly connected world, even sacred spaces are not immune to digital intrusion. While smartphones and smartwatches offer convenience, they also come with built-in microphones and passive listening technologies that can compromise the privacy of deeply personal moments—especially the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
This post addresses the growing concern over electronic devices in the confessional and offers practical steps to protect the sacred seal. Whether you’re a priest, penitent, or parish staff member, understanding the risks—and simple ways to mitigate them—can help preserve the reverence and confidentiality this sacrament demands.
🔇 FOR THE REVERENCE AND PRIVACY OF THE CONFESSIONAL 🔇
In honor of the sacred seal of Confession and to ensure full privacy for both priest and penitent, we kindly request the following:
📵 Please silence and turn off all electronic devices:
-
Cell phones
-
Smartwatches (e.g., Apple Watch, Fitbit, etc.)
-
Tablets or any device with a microphone or voice assistant
🛑 Please do not bring devices into the confessional:
Even when in a purse or pocket, phones and smartwatches may still:
-
Passively listen through voice assistant software (e.g., Siri, Google)
-
Record audio through apps or software running in the background
-
Transmit data over networks (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular)
For your protection, do not bring any electronic device into the confessional.
If needed, use a Faraday pouch or leave the device in a secure place outside.
“The confessional is not a place for surveillance—visible or invisible. It is a sanctuary for the soul.”
Thank you for respecting the sacred silence.
