Texas voter registration closes October
Two weeks ago I asked whether you were registered.¹ Today, for Texans, the question has a date on it. Monday, October 5, is the last day to register for the November 3 election.²
If you already confirmed your name on the roll, this note is still useful. Ask one other person. A spouse. A son or daughter home from school. A neighbor who moved last spring and never sent the change. The work is that close.
Look yourself up on the Secretary of State’s site. If the record is wrong, or if there is no record, finish the application today. Do not leave a paper form in a mailbox late this afternoon and assume the postmark will save it. The state has warned that mailed applications may not receive a same-day postmark.³ Use a method that actually dates the filing on October 5.
Readers outside Texas already have their assignment from the earlier post: find your own deadline. This one is for the people whose clock is striking now.
The argument has not changed. You cannot love the common good in the abstract and leave your name off the roll.⁴ After today the next questions wait: a plan, a friend, and later a watchful eye at the place where the ballots are handled. Those can wait a fortnight. The roll cannot.
